Destination Crenshaw is built for and by Black Los Angeles.
Destination Crenshaw is a community-inspired public art exhibit and streetscape design project that highlights the world-class contributions of Black Los Angeles to American and world culture. Home to the largest black community west of the Mississippi River, we have produced and influenced some of the greatest musicians, athletes, faith leaders, entertainers, and artists the world has ever seen. Black LA is also the center of some of the most effective multiracial community organizing and political activism in the nation.
We invite local artists from the South LA community to enter our next Mini Mural Open Call! As seen at our construction site, we are creating opportunities for artists to showcase their brilliance as the project is built. Chosen works will be displayed horizontally around construction worksites, with new opportunities becoming available as construction progresses. Ideally, artworks will contain messages and/or images that uplift and inspire the Black LA and the Crenshaw community.
In addition to having their works displayed on Crenshaw Boulevard, artists will also receive a stipend. Destination Crenshaw started the Mini Murals project to offer financial stipends to artists during the height of COVID when many artists saw commissions challenged throughout the industry. While our focus is to elevate Black artists through our formal Public Art Cultural process, we want to support the talents of as many Black and Brown artists as possible. In doing so, we hope to display the diaspora of Black art and the creativity embodied by the Crenshaw community.
The deadline to apply is Sunday, June 5, 2022 at 11:59 PM PT. Each submission will be reviewed by our Destination Crenshaw Public Art team.
